Your Quest for 2025
The author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien, was somewhat famously a devout Catholic. The influence of his faith can be clearly seen in various aspects of his literary works.
Let me share one fine example with you. First, in case you’re unfamiliar with The Lord of the Rings, I’ll summarize the plot very simply: To save all that is good and defeat an unspeakable evil, a fellowship of men, elves, wizards, dwarves and hobbits must go on a quest into the land of the enemy and destroy a magic ring in the volcanic fires of Mount Doom. The triumph of good over evil hinges on the success of this quest.
Interestingly, Tolkien chose to have them depart for their journey on December 25.
You might note the connection to the birth of Christ. Just as the Fellowship left the safety of Rivendell on December 25 to confront the mounting darkness, so too did Jesus depart the safety of Mary’s womb on December 25 to begin his battle with the darkness of this world.
One could say that, while advent was all about preparing for the adventure, the Christmas season is all about starting out on the quest.
During these festive days of the Christmas Octave, the Church reminds us that the journey will be demanding and dangerous. That is why we remember the martyrdom of St. Stephen on December 26 and the Holy Innocents on December 28.
As we look ahead to 2025, rather than just making a resolution, decide to go on a quest. What is the vice, the “One Ring,” in your life that has taken possession of your heart? What serpent has ensnared you? Will you crush it this year? Will you ask the Lord to help you carry it up Mount Calvary and destroy it in the fires of His love?
Christmas isn’t over, it’s just beginning, and so is your quest.
